In a collaborative project with Dan Shain (Rutgers-Camden Biology), Truman showed that a histidine-rich extension on the ATP6 subunit of mitochondrial ATP synthase from the glacier ice worm Mesenchytraeous solifugus increase ATP synthase activity. Amazingly, fusing this extension to the bacterial homolog AtpB enhances ATP production by 5-fold in E. coli and C. crescentus.
